Port of Emden

The seaport of Emden is situated approx. 38 nautical miles upstream from the mouth of the Ems and is thus the westernmost German seaport. The port facilities are divided into the tidal outer port with the Larrelter Polder and the Rysumer Nacken and the tide-free inner port which are connected by two high-capacity locks. The large sea lock, the Große Schleuse (260m in length, 40m in width and 11.76 in depth) is open for ocean and inland waterway shipping 365 days a year round the clock. The Nesserlander lock (170m in length, 18m in width and 7m in depth) is suitable above all for inland waterway vessels. A part of the Emden inland waterway port is a free port.

It is primarily new vehicles which are transshipped in the seaport of Emden as ro-ro cargo and the corresponding logistic system services for automobile manufacturers are performed. Transshipment, storage and distribution of paper and cellulose as well as other raw materials for the manufacture of paper are also of great importance.  Logistics services for on- and offshore wind energy constitute another important business area. However, bulk cargo, large quantities of general cargo and project cargo are regularly transshipped in the port of Emden too.

The port has 12 ro-ro berths, a floating ro-ro ramp (100t) for mobile use at various suitable quays, a container terminal as well as further multi-functional berths with high-capacity transshipment equipment. Almost all the berths are equipped with a rail siding. Emden port has more than 100,000m² covered storage areas, more than 900,000m² open storage areas as well as very large areas for extension available where port-affine companies can settle.
